Matthew 9:37-38 states: “Then saith he unto his disciples, the harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few.” “Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.”
Jeremiah 8:20 states: “The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.”
In these passages we find reference to harvest time. As well, we are currently in the season of harvest. Harvest, as well as other seasons, come and go quickly. It seems as if summer should just be beginning. However, before we know it, winter will be here. The point is: We had better gather the harvest while we can. With that in mind, I would like to consider some thoughts regarding harvest.
First, Harvest is a Limited Time. Jeremiah 8:20 tells us the harvest is ended. Our year is divided by four main seasons. Spring, summer, harvest, and winter. Each of these seasons is limited by time. Therefore, we need to be busy gathering the spiritual harvest that is plenteous. There isn’t much time left. The time will pass so swiftly, and the laborers are so few. May we pray for the Lord to send more laborers into the field.
Secondly, Harvest is a Lasting Treasure. Farmers harvest their fields every year. Some may still have some of last year’s crops. Because they gathered the crop, they have the luxury of enjoying the treasures this year. Those who plant, cultivate, harvest, and can their garden bounty, enjoy them for many months that follow. This is the result of hard work, but the hard work sure pays off when the snow is flying and the vegetables are being enjoyed. Spiritually, there is nothing greater than getting a lost soul to accept Jesus Christ as their savior. This is an eternal lasting treasure. What joy it is to know that someone will be in heaven by the efforts of another person. But greater yet, knowing that you could be the one that had a small part in the sinner turning to Christ. What a treasure.
Lastly, Harvest is a Lamenting Truth. As stated, harvest time is limited. It does not last forever. The harvest is plenteous, but unfortunately, the laborers are few. How can the harvest be gathered if there aren’t enough laborers? What happens to the unharvested crops? Are they left as spoil? Does it have to be this way? How sad it is to see a field that looked so promising during the earlier seasons, now laying in ruin. This is troubling, and we are only speaking of a crop. How much more troubling it should be for a soul to die without God. But, the truth still remains, there will be many unprepared when the Lord returns. For the unprepared, this will be a lamenting truth. The harvest will be past, the summer will be ended, and people will not be saved. There is the certainty of a soul harvest by the Lord himself. In fact, we find this recorded in Revelation 14: 15-17. “And I looked, and behold a white cloud, and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man, having on his head a golden c
The Lord will soon return and when he does, the lamenting truth will become reality. The Lord will reap the earth. The earth’s harvest is ripe. How sad it would be if we could have reached someone but never took the time to harvest a precious soul to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ for his glory and the individuals eternal good. Time is limited, the treasure is lasting, and Jesus is coming soon. Are you ready for his coming? If not, why not ask him into your heart today. If so, are you doing your best to reach those who have not yielded to the will of God and the Salvation of the Lord. May we bring them in from the fields of sin before it is too late.
