Being the light of the world is important responsibility

Hope for living

Some people place little value on what others think of them. Sadly enough, this is too true in many Christians’ lives as well. Too often, we forget that we are here to be a light to the world. Being the light of the world is an awesome responsibility that must not be taken lightly.
We can read a reference of this fact in II Corinthians 3:1-3. These verses state: “Do we begin again to commend ourselves? Or need we, as some others, epistles of commendation to you, or letters of commendation from you? Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men: Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in table of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.”
These verses basically state that we are letters written on the hearts of others, which become known and read of all men. We have been declared as a testimony of Christ Himself. Our epistle is not written with ink but by the Spirit of God on the hearts of flesh. With that being said, I want to consider our written letter and what it has to say.
First, Christians Should be as a Letter, Readable. In this day and time in which we live, it is sometimes so hard to detect the Child of God apart from the world. We should be a Christian that is readable. In other words, there should be something definite about us that sets us apart from those who do not know the Lord as Saviour. Readable Christians are those who are not ashamed of who they are and to whom they belong. They should willingly stand up and be recognizable so those around them are able to read their lives. As they read us, it is so important they are not reading about us or our supposed abilities and accomplishments. There is one who is far greater that we should be representing.
Secondly, Christians Should be as a Letter, Reflecting. Usually when someone writes a letter or a book, it seems to take on their character. It is usually detectable as to who the writer is. As God’s children, the letters we have written upon the hearts of others should reflect our father. We are at our best when we live our lives in such a way that we cannot be seen. The blessing is knowing that we have been faithful enough to be a total reflection of him. It should be our desire that when this world, our families, our foes, and our friends, look at us, all they can see is Jesus. What kind of reflection are we dispelling when others look upon us?
Lastly, Christians Should be as a Letter, Real. There is nothing worse than reading a document or letter and wandering if it is real and from the heart. How sad it is to read what is suppose to be a testament of a person which describes who and what they are and to have an idea that they may not be what they proclaim to be. Our desire should be that whatever is written upon the hearts of others is as real as real can be. But, how devastating it would be for the letter to be real but, in the wrong way. As Christians, we should constantly guard against saying one thing and writing another. We desperately need to be real. There are too many imposters all around us. I truly believe that the world, as well as those around us, have had enough of that to last for a lifetime. People are looking for a readable, reflecting, real person in whom they can trust and depend upon. Will you be that one?
There is something so important for those of us who, by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, have received his finished work of Calvary unto salvation. That is, that we must realize we are not just representing ourselves, we are representing God, the Lord, and the name of Christianity as a whole. Therefore, may we ever be mindful that we are writing a letter every day of our lives upon the hearts and minds of someone. As they read our writings what do they see, and what do they read. That choice is yours and it is mine. What will we do with this opportunity we have been given?
