Sin can be attractive, but its pleasure doesn’t last

Hope for living

There was a dear lady in our church who would say, “That’s good advice, but I don’t need it.”
Obviously she was just kidding. But we do find a verse in the Bible that offers good advice that we all need. This verse is found in Proverbs 1:10: “My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.”
Proverbs is a book of knowledge and wisdom that gives direction to us and how we ought to live our lives. It shows us things we should honor and obey, and it also gives insight to things we should resist, and avoid. Our specific verse is one which tells us to resist sin.
More than likely, this advice would not be found in most places or publications, but it is advice we all could use greatly in our lives. This advice, if heeded, will benefit our lives greatly and prevent many heartaches if we will adhere to its direction. There are three thoughts regarding sin and its presence in our lives.
Consider the attraction of sin. Our verse speaks of enticement. We read, “If sinners entice thee...” The word entice brings to mind attraction. This is an attraction that on the surface looks pleasant and harmless, but could be described as a mirage.
The results of sin are very harmful and damaging. Sin and sinners will try to entice us by the fun in sin, and the gain from it. Sin will always paint a pretty picture, but sometimes pictures do not tell the whole story. Sin is deceiving. Sin only leaves people despondent and destroyed.
In fact, the Bible tells us that there is pleasure in sin, but it also tells us that this pleasure is only for a season.
It has been said many times: “Sin will take you farther than you want to go, cost you more than you want to pay, and keep you longer than you want to stay.” Do not let the bait fool you; it is only hiding the hooks.
Ponder the acceptance of sin. Again, we see the words: “If sinners entice thee...” Notice the word “sinners.” It is in the plural. This denotes to us how sin is very popular. Sin is very common in our day, and comes in many forms. Therefore, the temptation of sin abounds all around us. We come in contact with it every day of our lives.
If we stand against sin and its deception, we will be taking an unpopular path. The path of righteousness is not a crowded path, but it is a blessed path. Every one of us have a decision to make: We will either accept sin or reject it. There aren’t any other options.
If we accept sin, we are rejecting Christ, and if we reject sin, we are accepting Christ. I would far rather be pleasing to the Lord, than to be accepted by the world and its allurement.
Debate the advancement of sin. Once sin has been allowed into our lives, it brings forth havoc. There are many people today who are slaves to sin. They looked at it and saw no danger in trying it just once. However, once calls for twice, and on and on it goes.
I know many who never thought that a little sin in their lives would result in shambles, but they underestimated the power of sin. We must not be attracted to sin, we cannot accept it, nor allow it to advance in our lives.
So, what can we do? Here is the GOOD ADVICE!
Embrace the avoidance of sin. “If sinners entice thee, consent thou not.” Reject it, refuse it, and run from it.
Consent carries the idea of responding. Therefore, we should not respond when sin comes calling.
“Consent not” implies to us a present tense. In other words, at all times, avoid sin and its attraction. Do not accept it.
There should be no room for debate or negotiation with sin and its evil charm. We should not learn about it, or be intrigued by it. We should wholeheartedly reject and refuse it.
If you are passive toward sin, you will never be able to defeat it in your life. Remember this good advice in the days of thy youth, in the days present, and in the days before you.
The Bible says it so well: “For every temptation there is a way of escape.”
“Consent thou not.” This is good advice!
