"As for us, our eyes as yet failed for our vain help: in our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save us. They hunt our steps, that we cannot go in our streets: our end is near, our days are fulfilled; for our end is come. Our persecutors are swifter than the eagles of the heaven: they pursued us upon the mountains, they laid wait for us in the wilderness. The breath of our nostrils, the anointed of the LORD, was taken in their pits, of whom we said, Under his shadow we shall live among the heathen." Lamentations 4:17-20

These verses describe the conditions, the cause and the consequences of the siege of Jerusalem. Their land is desperate and desolate, and the Lord is disappointed. How sad it is to see the Lord’s chosen city in this condition. It is very easy to make a parallel from this Biblical event to the times of our day. We are in a sad condition because we have left God out of our plans. The certain consequences are impending. America and all those that forget God will be judged.
These verses speak of salvation. Salvation, in this case, could be defined in two different ways: It could speak about atonement or assistance. We all need the Lord’s help in our lives and in our land. However, there are those who need more than the Lord’s help. They need his saving grace. Regardless of where you fall in this category, this thought can give understanding, knowledge and purpose for the days ahead.
It is important for us to realize God is available unto all men. He is not some distant God, who is unaware of the problems and affairs of mankind. We are told often throughout the Bible that there is nothing too hard for the Lord. He can do whatever he desires. However, it’s important for us to realize he will never do anything against his word, his purpose and his plan. With him, all things are always in accordance with what he has said. This is the case in these particular verses. He is speaking through Jeremiah. The thoughts of the Lord begin to break Jeremiah’s heart because he can see the condition of which God is speaking.
They looked for salvation — or atonement and assistance — but they went about it the wrong way. They needed a word from the Lord. We, too, are looking the wrong way and we need a word from above. We need to consider three thoughts:
First, consider how They Looked for Salvation in the Wrong Place. When help was needed, they turned the wrong way. It is so easy to be deceived in the time of need. We need to be aware that there are many places to which one can turn, but these places cannot bring about what is needed most. Some of these places may not bring anything but temptation and failure. There is only one safe harbor. That’s why the Bible tells us that the Lord is the way, the truth and the life. No one will come to the father but by him. Our verses state they were looking for a nation that could not save them. There is no refuge in that searching.
They also Looked for Salvation in the Wrong Person. They turned to the wrong people. They actually turned to their enemies. So often people turn to those who do not truly have their best interest at heart. These people do not care about the end result; they are in it for their own interest. We do not need more religion, reform, politicians or potentates. We need help from an all powerful one. Thankfully, there is one — Jesus Christ — who always has the well being of others as his priority. In times of trouble and despair, there is no other place to turn. Jesus can meet your every need regardless of what it may be. If you are tired of your old life and the lack of joy and peace, try Jesus. He is the best friend you could ever have. There is really no other option.
Lastly we see, They Looked for Salvation in the Wrong Position or direction. They looked around them instead of above them. Too often we try to find our help in people of inferior position. Instead of trying to find help in the right way, we sometimes concern ourselves with someone’s pedigree or degree. Again, we need to look unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. After all, earthly position is temporary at best.
Regardless of your need, whether it be for assistance or atonement, Jesus is the answer. No other place, person or position is worth turning to. They’re all just empty promises. However, Jesus is more than just a promise; he holds all power. Therefore, he is able to do abundantly more than we can think or ask. He is the only source of salvation. Will you turn to him today?
