The Bible in Hebrews 12:1 and 2 tells us: “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us. Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
This passage speaks of running a race. Let’s consider running our spiritual race, the instructions and requirements surrounding it, and the results of putting it into practice in our lives.
First, We Must be Faithful. Anyone who knows they will be running a race will make the necessary preparations. In order to run this race, we must put aside the weights that may encumber us. There are many things in this life that could hinder our faithfulness, but in order to be successful for the Lord, we must lay aside those things which would hold us down. If there are things in your life that get more attention than your walk with the Lord then they ought to be set aside.
Not only are there weights that encumber us but there are also sins that entangle us. The Bible tells us to lay aside the things that beset us. Those thoughts, deeds and fleshly desires will hold us back.
We must be prepared and we must be patient. Our verse speaks of running with patience. Patience is a virtue that is not commonly known or practiced much in this day and time which we live. There are some things regarding our spiritual race that we must be aware of and practice in order to show a patience and desire that is pleasing to the Lord. We cannot run ahead of God. We must free ourselves from all hindrances and in patience be faithful to the cause. We cannot allow ourselves to be held back or to be inconsistent. We must remain faithful.
Secondly, We Must be Focused. If we are going to be successful we must keep our eyes on the goal. We cannot stray and wander if we ever expect to run a good race. We need to concentrate on those heavenly things that will prevent us from becoming distracted and discouraged.
So then the question is, how can we do that? We must stay focused on Jesus. Verse 2 plainly tells us that we are to look unto Jesus. I must keep my eyes upon the Lord. He is the author and finisher of my faith. The Bible tells us to trust in the Lord and to lean not to our own understanding.
Also, I must run my race and you must run yours. If I spend all my time looking at others, I will be hindered. I need to find my lane and stay with what I know works for me. I cannot base my success or failures on another.
Lastly, I Need to Finish the Race! There is no place to quit and no place to give in. The only true fulfillment is crossing the finish line. Anything short of that will bring sadness and defeat. I cannot give up. I must keep going. Once I have crossed the finish line there will be a reward.
The Apostle Paul said I have finished my course, henceforth there is a crown of righteousness laid up for me. We are not running this race in vain. There is a reward waiting on the other side.
We may often become weary, but just remember, our example, the Lord Jesus Christ. We are told that he endured the cross and despised the shame. However, now he is sitting on the right hand of the throne of God. This assures us there will be time for resting when the course is finished.
In the meantime, don’t let discouragement get you down. Turn to Jesus. Allow him to be your crew chief. Let him focus your priorities, lighten your load and equip you to patiently run your race for his glory. This is the only plan that will assure your successful finish.
