Meaningful changes revolve around God
Hope for living Calvin Hensley January 31 2009 We hear a lot about buzzwords. Without doubt, the biggest buzzword of our day is the word “change.” It has received much fanfare and attention. It became a focal point of the recent elections, and the majority of America spoke by letting it be known they wanted the leadership of our nation to lead us in a different direction. However, we need to realize that we need more change than what we have seen. The presidential change alone is not enough. The call for change has demanded much of my personal attention lately. We are told in II Chronicles 7:14 that: “If my people which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” I am fearful that we have attempted to change the wrong way. A change of one office or one person is not going to solve all the problems of our land or the world. The requirements are far greater than that. We cannot depend upon others to fix our problems. We cannot expect someone else’s attempts to take care of our personal necessities. It is time that we stop turning to gadgets, fads, trends, and popularity and to put the blame where it belongs. The problem begins with us as individuals then reaches to our families. From that point our communities, state, and nation have all fallen short of the demands given by the Word of God. We have failed to humble ourselves, we have not prayed as we should, and instead of seeking the face of God, we have turned away from his will and purpose for our lives. Instead of America resisting the temptation of wicked ways, we have embraced them. People have not sought forgiveness of their sins; therefore, there is no word from heaven, The results are right before us. Our land has not been healed. This is more than a political matter. It is a moral, spiritual and survival matter. I would like to quickly define where change is really needed. First, our families need change. Joshua let it be known where he stood. He said in Joshua 24:15: “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Our families need to serve the Lord. Anything short of that is not the change that is needed. Our priorities are materialistic and narcissistic. We must change our ways, we must turn to the Lord. Secondly, our churches need change. Hosea’s prophecy is being fulfilled right before our eyes. Hosea 8:1 says: “Set the trumpet to thy mouth. He shall come as an eagle against the house of the Lord, because they have transgressed my covenant, and trespassed against my law.” Our churches have become social houses of events and activities. When this happened in the Bible, the Lord drove the merchants out of his house and told them that it was a house of prayer, yet they had made it a den of thieves. Our houses of worship must change. We need to return to seeking the will of God, and directing our worship to where it is due. Anything less will not bring the right change. Thirdly, our schools need change. Proverbs 22:6 says: “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Our children need to be taught the technologies and advancements of our day. These things definitely have their priorities and place. However, above all else, the greatest subject missing from our curriculum is the greatest story known to mankind, the story of the cross. I am convinced if we would put God back in the classroom, real change would be evident. Lastly, our government needs change. I want you to pay close attention to Jeremiah 2:11: “Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? But my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit.” This verse tells us that the gods we have chosen are non-existent. We are told we have changed our glory for things that do not profit us. As we have turned away from the principles of God, we have decreased God’s blessings upon our land. He cannot be pleased with our sad condition. May we not change just for the sake of change. Oh, that we would return to our days of glory when our families, churches, schools and nation put God first and foremost in every event, procedure and decision before us. This is the real change that is most needed. Will you enlist in Biblical change that will bring glory unto God? He is the only one who can truly bring the change we need most!
