Relationship with Jesus Christ exceeds any other
Hope for living Calvin Hensley April 7 2007 Revelation 3:20 says: “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: If any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.” In the Middle East, to have a meal with someone is a token of true friendship. Our verse says that the Lord will come in and sup with him and he with me. Life is to be a life of which friendship is to be enjoyed. Life without friendship can be poor and shabby. But a life in Jesus Christ is a life of real blessing. To add to this, the Bible tells us that there is no greater friend than a man lay down his life for his friend. The Lord is the greatest friend anyone could ever have because he gave his life so we might have life and life more abundantly. His great friendship far exceeds any earthly friendship because it cannot be broken and will never end. The Bible says, “A friend loveth at all times,” and there is no doubt God will always love us. Not only does the Lord love all people at all times, but he also standeth at the door. It would behoove us to learn the nearness of His presence. He is not some God that is far away and unconcerned about mankind. He is at our side. Many would say the Lord is only in Heaven or in history. However, the New Testament gives us a different picture. Many times over, the Lord presents himself as either being at the door or being the door. In this verse there are three things that show the character of the Lord. These three things also describe the friendship we have with the Lord. First notice the patience of our friend who standeth at the door. He stands at the door and knocks. Most people would not have a lot of patience if they were standing at our door and knocking and there wasn’t an answer. But, the Lord patiently awaits an opening to enter into our hearts. In love, He waits to enter the heart of every man, lady, boy, or girl that will open their door. Second, notice that in passion our friend standeth at the door. The Lord speaks to us in love. Sometimes he speaks to challenge our hearts, comfort our hearts, or to convince our hearts because he loves us with an everlasting love. So often, the love of a friend is dependent upon an action or reaction. However, the Lord, in his great patience, loves us regardless. There is nothing you could ever do to cause God to stop loving you. If someone really loves you that much, why wouldn’t you let them in? Not only is our Lord a friend with great patience and passion, He also is a friend with purpose. He is not a friend just to be a friend. He has a reason in being our friend. There is a purpose in him entering into our lives. He desires to have communion with us in our lives. Life will never be what it ought to be without the Lord Jesus Christ being a vital part of it. There should be no greater purpose in life than the purpose God has for us. Doing his will brings the greatest rewards. Finding His purpose and fulfilling it will bring great joy, comfort, and victory in the life of the believer. This is important to realize. If you do not open the door, He cannot come into your life. There are many people who have heard the Lord knocking, but they have not invited him in. If you do not know the Lord, he is standing at the door of your heart, awaiting your invitation to come in and take up abode with you. He is a friend who is always near. He is at the door of your heart. Why not let him in today? Think about it: He is near enough to hear you. What do you want to say to him? If you haven’t let him, why not do so today? He is alive, he is available, and he will be abundantly gracious if you will only open the door!
